Overview of the Program

Magic Sounds teaches a child "how to read" by learning phonics. The child learns "how" to examine a word and to know why a word is pronounced as it is. The program is learned in four easy parts:

  1. The child learns to name the letters of the alphabet.
  2. The childs learns the sounds of the individual letters.
  3. The childs learns to read a vowel sound and a consonant sound together to form the "Magic Sounds".
  4. The childs learns to sound out the words using the "Magic Sounds" procedure for word attack.

The Beginner Reading Program

The Phonics First beginning program presents 69 "Magic Sounds" that are repeated in more than 900 words. "ab". "eb", "ib", "ob", "ub:"are examples of the "Magic Sounds." There are as many "Magic Sounds" in a word as there are syllables -- "at" is the "Magic Sound" in "cat." "Kitten" has two "Magic Sounds", "it" and "en." "Cabinet" has three "Magic Sounds", "ab", "in", and "et." And, "helicopter" has four "Magic Sounds", "el," "ic," "op," "er."
